The Impact of Diurnal Precipitation over Sumatra Island, Indonesia, on Synoptic Disturbances and its Relation to the Madden-Julian Oscillation

چکیده
The impact of diurnal precipitation over Sumatra Island, the Indonesian Maritime Continent (MC), on synoptic disturbances eastern Indian Ocean is examined using high-resolution rainfall data from Global Satellite Mapping Precipitation project and Japanese 55-year Reanalysis during rainy season September to April for period 2000–2014. When cycle strong, high area observed in afternoon migrates offshore nighttime reaches 500 km off coast average. strong events are followed by development several days, apparent twin straddling equator develop only when convective center Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) lies (MJO-IO). Without MJO, mainly south equator. differences locations behaviors active related strength mean horizontal winds lower troposphere. During MJO-IO, intensification northeasterly northern hemisphere blowing into organized MJO convection addition southeasterly southern facilitate formation disturbances. These results suggest that seed arising migration differently depending states Ocean. Furthermore, it shown with tend have longer duration continuing eastward propagation across MC, whereas activities other weaken considerably MC again western Pacific. facilitates smooth intraseasonal MC.

Near-global Impact of the Madden-julian Oscillation on Rainfall
The accuracy of synoptic-based weather forecasting deteriorates rapidly after five days and is not routinely available beyond 10 days. Conversely, climate forecasts are generally not feasible for periods of less than 3 months, resulting in a weather-climate gap. The tropical atmospheric phenomenon known as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) has a return interval of 30 to 80 days that might par...

[1] The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant component of the intraseasonal (30–90 days) variability in the tropical atmosphere. It consists of large-scale coupled patterns in atmospheric circulation and deep convection, with coherent signals in many other variables, all propagating eastward slowly ( 5 m s ) through the portion of the Indian and Pacific oceans where the sea surface i...
متن کاملMoisture Modes and the Madden-Julian Oscillation
Moisture mode instability is thought to occur in the tropical oceanic atmosphere when precipitation is a strongly increasing function of saturation fraction (precipitable water divided by saturated precipitable water) and when convection acts to increase the saturation fraction. A highly simpli ed model of the interaction between convection and large-scale ows in the tropics suggests that there...
